The monastery is dedicated to Saint Archdeacon Stephen the First Martyr and belongs to the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral.

The single church was erected in the 14th century during the reign of Tsar Dušan, who is held by tradition and depicted in a ktitor fresco alongside Saint Stefan of Dečani holding a model of the church to be its donor. It functioned as a metochion of the Visoki Dečani Monastery, with the first archival mention dated 1677 when the lords of Paštrovići elected a new abbot here. The interior preserves mid-14th-century frescoes notable for an unusual stylistic blend of Gothic and Byzantine elements, the principal cultural-heritage feature of the property. The monastery is active and became a nunnery in 2002, set in mountain air among aromatic herbs.
