Budva Church

The main Orthodox and Catholic churches in and near Budva reflect the region's religious heritage. The Church of St John the Baptist (Crkva Svetog Jovana Krstitelja) sits on the waterfront in the Old Town, dating from the 5th century and accessible via narrow medieval streets. The Church of Holy Mary in nearby villages and the Church of St Nicholas serve as focal points for Orthodox worship. Most remain active places of worship with services in Serbian. Visitors are welcome outside of service times; modest dress (covered shoulders and knees) receives appreciation though enforcement is not strict. Photography inside churches is sometimes restricted. Several churches have bells that ring at dawn (05:00–06:00), creating an atmospheric audio landmark. Ancient stone inscriptions and religious art inside provide glimpses into centuries of regional history. The architecture blends Byzantine and Venetian influences. Many churches charge a small donation (€1–€2) for entry or candle lighting.
